The world of infertility is a complicated one that many couples have had to endure. It can be very confusing when after trying for a year to conceive; a couple begins it search into finding out what is going wrong.

For many, they begin this process with talking with their own family doctor. This doctor can run some basic tests, but they may suggest that a couple begin trying to find a fertility specialist to work with.

There are many fertility physicians and patients can be lost when it comes to selecting the right type of infertility specialist. Learning about what makes them different is a great way to educate yourself about infertility and how to resolve the condition.

A Reproductive Endocrinologist can be seen by either a man or a woman and this doctor specializes in hormones. They have worked in the field of gynecology and done an additional two to three years study in the field of Endocrinology. In addition, they also have passed both a written and an oral exam to become certified. Some couples may feel this is the next best step for them, for others they may decide that it would be best for the male to visit with a male infertility specialist first.

What is a Male Infertility Specialist?

A Reproductive Endocrinologist can be considered a male infertility specialist, but there are other doctors who also specialize in this field. A Urologist is often the starting point when looking for a male infertility specialist. When looking for this type of doctor make sure to find out if they have additional training in male infertility. A male infertility specialist will have had additional training and they will have an office that is set up to run diagnostic tests and the male infertility specialist will experienced in any type of surgical repair that may be needed.

All of these factors need to be considered when looking at a male infertility specialist. Many men feel more comfortable with a doctor that has had extensive training and also understands the complexity of emotions that can be involved when dealing with male infertility. A male infertility specialist is also comfortable working with a woman's doctor and is familiar with procedures that can be done to remedy infertility.

Make sure to conduct an interview with any doctor that is being considered and ask about their credentials and experience with infertility. Choosing a male infertility specialist is a big decision and patients should take the time to make sure that this is the right physician for them.
