Costs Of Infertility Medical Insurance Vary According To States And Type Of Coverage
When people go out and shop for infertility medical insurance they will have two main kinds of medical treatments in mind: IVF or in-vitro fertilization which can be simple or quite complicated and they can think about infertility testing and other treatments such as blood as well as ultrasound testing and even artificial insemination. The cost of infertility medical insurance coverage will vary not only across states in the US but also according to the kind of treatments covered by the plan.
Mandated In Fifteen States In The US
There are some infertility medical insurance plans that in about fifteen states in the US where infertility insurance is mandatory will cover for some of the costs of fertility treatment. If you are living in a state where infertility insurance is not mandatory then your infertility medical insurance may only cover you for fertility services but not IVF and the reason for this is that costs of IVF are so high and so insurance providers do not want to cover them unless you pay higher premium.
Most health insurance plans will provide coverage for simple infertility services such as testing to see whether or not a person is infertile. However, once it has been established that you have an infertility problem then such health insurance plans may not cover you any further which is when you need to shop for a good infertility medical insurance plan. Unfortunately though, except for the states where infertility insurance is mandated, it is hard to find good infertility medical insurance that covers you for infertility treatment and for IVF there are actually very few companies and plans that are available.
Of course if you live in the fifteen states where infertility insurance is mandated you won’t have many problems. These states include Arkansas, Illinois, Montana, Rhode Island, California, Louisiana, New Jersey, Texas, Connecticut, Maryland, New York, West Virginia, Hawaii, Massachusetts and Ohio.
And, in the state of Illinois, since the Family Building Act was passed in the year 1991, it is now necessary for employers employing more than twenty-five employees to provide their employees with group health insurance plans that must also cover diagnosis and also treatment of infertility till the stage when four IVF attempts have been made.
It pays to also understand existing infertility insurance laws and a good example is the law as it applies to infertility insurance in the state of California. In a nutshell, such law requires that insurers that provide group health insurance must cover expenses for medical, surgical, and hospital care and in addition the insurer must inform employers that coverage for infertility is available. However, there is nothing in this law that requires those insurers to force employers to provide infertility insurance or even for the insurance provider to offer infertility insurance cover.
